E-cigarettes and vapes

While one term might mean something different to an adult smoker, e-cigarettes and vapes are essentially the same thing. That is to say, they are devices that heat e-liquid to produce a vapour and offer adult smokers a smoke-free alternative to cigarettes. This process of heating an e-liquid is typically referred to as vapourisation. Vapes come in a variety of forms – from disposable and rechargeable devices to more complex larger tank devices and box or mod vapourisers.

The basics of e-cigarettes and vapes

To put it simply, the terms “vape” and “e-cigarette” refer to an electronic or battery-operated device that heats e-liquid to produce a vapour. Typically a combination of a device with a rechargeable or non-rechargeable lithium battery, vapes usually come either with a tank, or with pre-filled “caps” or “pods” that are sold separately. Tank-style vapes usually require the tank to be filled with an e-liquid, which is then heated using power from the battery. In wick and coil vapes, when activated, an internal mechanism known as an atomiser powers up to heat the e-liquid. The e-liquid usually contains vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, flavourings and nicotine, among other ingredients, which produce vapour.

Different vape styles

While e-cigarettes and vapes are essentially the same thing, there are different types of these devices, such as vape mods, vape pens, pod systems and cigalikes – an early form of e-cigarette designed to look and feel like a cigarette.

Another variable in vapes and e-cigarettes are their batteries. Battery size typically depends on the style of device – and it is fair to say that, generally, the larger the battery, the longer the battery life. In larger mod-style vapes, rechargeable batteries can usually be removed for charging, or batteries can be replaced altogether once they have run out. Some of the smaller, disposable pen-style devices typically integrate the battery into the system, and may or may not be rechargeable, depending on the exact brand and product.

* “95% less” represents the average reductions in levels of a range of harmful chemicals (excluding nicotine) compared to the smoke from a reference cigarette. See Important Information on IQOS.com

Adult smokers looking for a new device should know that IQOS ILUMA does not require any cleaning to ensure optimal performance. IQOS ILUMA is one of the newest members of the IQOS family. IQOS ILUMA uses induction heating technology to heat tobacco from the inside, providing a clean and consistent experience. IQOS ILUMA provides real tobacco taste and satisfaction.

IQOS products are not risk-free and do deliver nicotine, which is addictive. The best decision any adult smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether. IQOS products are not alternatives to quitting and are not designed as cessation aids.
